In recent years, however, a growing body of research and expert advice has highlighted that supporting joint health is a far more complex process than relying on a single ingredient.

Cartilage, synovial fluid, connective tissue and muscles work together continuously to ensure that our dog can move with ease. That is why modern formulas are now based on combinations of several complementary active ingredients.

Glucosamine and chondroitin sulphate are among the best-known ingredients for joint protection

Glucosamine occurs naturally in cartilage and connective tissue, which is why it has long been one of the best-known ingredients in joint care products.

Its role is primarily linked to supporting the normal structure and elasticity of cartilage. Closely linked to this, chondroitin sulphate may play a role in maintaining the water-binding capacity of cartilage, which may contribute to the joints’ proper flexibility and load-bearing capacity.

Numerous studies have examined the combination of these two ingredients in dogs, particularly with regard to supporting mobility and joint comfort (McCarthy et al., 2007).

Type II native collagen may play a special role

Collagen is one of the body’s most important structural proteins and is naturally present in cartilage, ligaments and connective tissue.

Type II native, undenatured collagen has received particular attention in research in recent years. According to some studies, its long-term use may support joint comfort and mobility, particularly in active or older dogs (Gupta et al., 2012).

Hyaluronic acid is the joints„ natural ”lubricant’

The quality of the synovial fluid is just as important as the cartilage itself.

Hyaluronic acid plays a key role in this, as it is naturally present in synovial fluid. Its role is to help ensure proper „lubrication” of the joints, reduce friction and support smooth movement.

As a natural source of sulphur, MSM supports connective tissue

MSM, or methylsulfonylmethane, is an organic sulphur compound that is widely used in joint health supplements.

Sulphur is a natural component of connective tissue, which is why MSM can be a popular ingredient for active, sporting or older dogs.

The role of omega-3 fatty acids goes beyond the joints

The omega-3 fatty acids found in salmon oil — particularly EPA and DHA — have long been recognised for their many roles in the body.

As well as supporting the joints, they may help to:

to regulate inflammatory processes,

for healthy skin and coat,

as well as to general well-being.

Genuine support stems from a comprehensive approach

Joint protection isn't just about a single ingredient.

The right amount of exercise, a healthy weight, a balanced diet and a carefully formulated blend of active ingredients can all help ensure that our dog remains active, energetic and full of life in the long term.

Sources

Comblain, F., Sanchez, C., Lesponne, I., Balligand, M., & Henrotin, Y.
